Maria Sharapova chosen as Porsche global brand ambassador

Porsche Presents New Testimonial

Maria Sharapova, the Russian-born tennis star, has been chosen by Porsche to be the brand’s new global ambassador — the twenty-six-year-old will represent the brand at events and shows worldwide for the duration of her three-year contract. Many are unaware that Sharapova previously held much the same title for Land Rover, back in 2006.

“This is a really special day for me,“ said Sharapova. “I have had the privilege to be associated with some of the best brands in the world, but now to be partners with Porsche, is such an amazing honor,“ she explained during her presentation in Stuttgart. Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG, seemed to agree. “Maria Sharapova is the perfect choice. Her profile and charisma are an ideal fit for Porsche. She is also highly respected around the world and enjoys an outstanding reputation,” he added.

Some may question Porsche’s decision to choose a female tennis star as its ambassador, as Porsche has typically marketed itself towards men, but keep in mind that the company’s best selling model in the States is the Cayenne, and the brand is expanding rapidly in emerging markets.

Brumos Balancing the Traditional With the New for 2013 Rolex 24

Brumos Racing is all about history and tradition, and through the years, the team has built its reputation by staying true to the principles that first brought them success. While Brumos remains dedicated to those traditions, their longevity in motorsports would not be possible without adapting and evolving. The Brumos of today may still look similar to their predecessors, but their current day success can be attributed to the state-of-the-art as well as the traditional.

In keeping with the traditional, Brumos will run the 51 st Rolex 24 in their iconic white, red and blue #59 Porsche 911 GT3. And although Brumos’ own Hurley Haywood will see this Rolex 24 from outside the race car for the first time in over 40 years, he will be very much in demand, dividing his time between duties as Grand Marshal and advisor to the Brumos drivers. The trio of drivers that put the #59 on the podium last year at Daytona – Andrew Davis, Leh Keen and Marc Lieb – will return, joined by Bryan Sellers, one of the top Porsche drivers in ALMS competition.

Andrew Davis anticipates differences this year, saying, “Driving the famous #59 Porsche without Hurley will just seem strange. Luckily, as Grand Marshal, he will be there waving the green flag for us. He can probably be even more supportive of us this year without his own driving duties.

We had some really good testing in the off season. At the Roar, unfortunately, we had a motor failure that ended our session, but we were happy with our progress. I am proud of our team, our effort, and my co-drivers, and know we will have the Brumos #59 right up front again for the race.

We hope to repeat what we were able to do last year and end the race spraying champagne, but this time we want to be a couple of spots higher on that podium.”

For Leh Keen, the Roar Test offered a chance to check out the competition and fine tune things. “The Brumos guys did a great job the last few months getting ready for the race,” he said. “We are so prepared, that even when we get something like a motor failure thrown at us, we can overcome it. This will be a really exciting race – Hurley is going to be up there waving us on and there will be a lot of Brumos Booster Brigade spirit in the infield and stands. A Rolex 24 victory is one major career goal that has been elusive. Last year we ran a strong race and finished on the podium, so I know it is obtainable. I would love to win the Rolex 24 more than anything. Doing it for Brumos, alongside Andrew, Marc and Bryan – it couldn’t get any better than that.”

Porsche Factory driver Marc Lieb is always a welcome addition to the Brumos team, and the assignment is one he also enjoys. “I am very happy to be back with Brumos,” he said. “We had really strong runs together the last two years and I look forward to working with the team and drivers again. The competition this year is going to be crazy, but when you come to Daytona and get to be in a Brumos car, it is always a fantastic feeling because you know it is one of the best prepared cars on the grid. Although we lost Hurley as a driver, we have an extraordinary driver lineup with Andrew, Leh and Bryan.”

As the newcomer to the group, Bryan Sellers feels both excitement and pressure, saying, “People tell me I am stepping in to fill the void that Hurley is leaving, but nobody in motorsports can replace Hurley. I just happen to be the newest pair of shoes sitting in the car. I’m honored to be able to step in, but it’s not a replacement role, because no one has ever been able to do what Hurley has done. I feel we are in a really good spot to be able to race for the win this year. That is our goal, to have a race car that is good over the duration of the 24 hours. So for me, to be part of the Brumos effort along with Andrew, Leh and Marc, is really special and I hope to be able to help mark a new chapter in Brumos history.”

The 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona will be held on Saturday, January 26 th , beginning at 3:30 PM ET and will run through 3:30 PM Sunday, January 27 th. SPEED TV and MRN Racing Network will combine for complete coverage. SPEED TV will cover the event live from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Saturday, resuming on Sunday at 9:00 AM through the end of the race.
