2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Monaco race report

Matteo Cairoli continued his stellar start to the 2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, dominating proceedings around the streets of Monte Carlo to win the 250th race since Porsche’s premier one-make series was launched in 1993.

The Italian Porsche Junior, who was also the class of the field in round one at the Circuit de Catalunya, was imperious in qualifying around the streets of the world’s most famous principality, taking the vital pole position by 0.37 seconds ahead of guest driver, Klaus Bachler.

Third on the grid went to perennial championship hopeful, Michael Ammermüller with Total 911 columnist and MOMO-Megatron racer, Ben Barker fending off French Porsche Junior, Mathieu Jaminet by a scant 0.001 seconds for fourth.

While conditions for Friday’s qualifying session couldn’t have been better, for Sunday morning’s race, the weather had closed in on the Mediterranean coast, soaking the 2.07-mile street track and requiring the race to be started behind the safety car.

When the 25-strong pack was eventually released on lap three, Cairoli immediately set about working away from Bachler, the FACH Auto Tech driver stretching his lead comfortably until a mid-race safety car period was required to clear the track of stricken cars.

As in Spain though, the mid-race interval didn’t disrupt the 19-year-old Italian’s rhythm, Cairoli once again building a buffer over Bachler when racing got underway with eight laps remaining.

Even a late race downpour didn’t effect Cairoli who kept his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car out of the barriers despite rivers forming across the Monte Carlo tarmac in places, securing his second win of the 2016 season.

The same could not be said of Bachler though who, after the safety car, initially began to fall back in the battle between Ammermüller and Barker for third. The Austrian was able to escape too much pressure however, on lap 15 of 16, Bachler was caught out by the rain at the first corner, slamming into the barriers.

Bachler would have been out on the spot, handing the final spot to Barker (who had spent the whole race glued to Ammermüller’s rear wing, looking for a way through) however, with the red flags bringing the race to an early end, the results were taken from the previous lap.

This left Ammermüller in third with Barker missing out on his second consecutive Monaco podium – the Brit finished third last year – by the smallest of margins.

Jaminet, racing for the Martinet by Almeras squad, finished fifth after a reasonably uneventful race close to home turf however, the star of the 250th Supercup race was undoubtedly German Porsche Junior, Sven Müller.

The title contender (second in Barcelona), crashed in qualifying and started at the back of the grid. Despite Monaco being notoriously difficult to overtake, Müller charged his way through from 25th to finish 13th, securing a few vital points.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Barcelona, Spain race report

Matteo Cairoli dominated the first round of the 2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, leading throughout at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona to take his first victory in Porsche’s premier one-make series.

The Italian – starting his second Supercup season – was in imperious form in qualifying, his best lap time of 1m50.187 nearly seven tenths of a second faster than fellow front row starter and Porsche Junior, Mathieu Jaminet.

A good start to Sunday’s race saw Cairoli – racing for the same Fach Auto Tech squad that took Earl Bamber to the 2014 title – race off into an early lead, crossing the line at the end of lap one 1.7 seconds ahead of Sven Müller.

The German Porsche Junior, starting from third, leapfrogged Jaminet on the run down to the first corner but, from there, was not able to get on terms with Cairoli until the safety car was called at two-thirds distance to remove one of the backmarkers from the gravel.

At the restart, Cairoli was again unchallenged though, easing away from Lechner Racing Team’s Müller to eventually win the 14-lap encounter – his maiden Supercup success – by nearly two seconds.

Behind Müller, Jaminet initially fell back into the clutches of the chasing pack at the restart. The 21-year-old was hounded for much of lap ten by MOMO-Megatron’s Ben Barker (who had worked his way through the field well in the early stages having started from eighth).

The Briton though couldn’t find a way through however and was soon on the defensive from Sven Müller’s Lechner Racing teammate, Michael Ammermüller. Barker was able to keep the Supercup veteran at bay over the closing laps though to secure his best start to a Supercup season since 2014.

Ammermüller had started from fourth but a terrible start saw him drop to eighth on lap one before a collision between Christian Engelhart and Jeffrey Schmidt saw the latter delayed and the former retired in the gravel on lap two, allowing Ammermüller to regain the ground he had lost.

Schmidt would eventually recover to sixth, just ahead of FÖRCH Racing’s Robert Lukas while Supercup newcomer, Zaid Ashkanani enjoyed an impressive debut in Spain, finishing eighth.

2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Barcelona, Spain preview

Six-and-a-half months after Philipp Eng was crowned as last year’s champion, the 2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season is finally here. However, having been signed as a BMW works driver during the winter, the Austrian racer won’t be on the grid to defend his title this year.

With the total number of Supercup titles accumulated between all the drivers on the grid at the Circuit de Catalunya season opener in Barcelona totalling zero, we’re guaranteed a new champion in 2016.

The Lechner MSG Racing Team is fielding two of the undoubted favourites for this years title, with German duo, Michael Ammermüller and Sven Müller teaming up in Walter Lechner’s famous squad.

Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland 2016

Ammermüller has finished third in the last three Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup championships and will no doubt be a strong contender at the first race of the season in Spain this weekend.

Last season, the 30-year-old driver dominated the opening round, romping home to a seven-second victory around the Circuit de Catalunya having started from pole position.

Lechner teammate, Müller is perhaps the overwhelming favourite for the Supercup crown this year though. The Porsche Junior – in his third season under Weissach’s wing – was a revelation in the tail part of 2015, winning four of the final six Supercup races to finish second in the final standings.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Monza 2015

The young German star has started 2016 in similarly imperious fashion too, dominating the opening rounds of the Carrera Cup Deutschland at Oschersleben before adding to his two victories with another triumph Hockenheim last weekend.

Christian Englehart – driving in 2016 for MRS GT-Racing – may well be the closest challenger to his fellow Germans. His consistency currently sees him sit second in the German Carrera Cup and he finished fourth overall in the Supercup last year.

2016 is unlikely to be an all-German affair however. Sven Müller’s fellow Porsche Junior, Matteo Cairoli – back for his second Supercup campaign – won at Monza in his debut season last year and, in the opening round of the Carrera Cup France in April was lapping faster than the winning Supercup pace at Barcelona.

Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme, Lausitzring

The Italian though was bested in that opening Carrera Cup France encounter this year by Frenchman, Mathieu Jaminet. The 21-year-old joins Cairoli and Müller on Porsche Junior’s books this season and is likely to prove quick.

Finally, Total 911 columnist (and new FIA WEC racer), Ben Barker will return to the series for a fourth Supercup season. Racing again for MOMO-Megatron, the Brit will hope to emulate 2014 this weekend when he started the year with a podium at the Spanish circuit.

The sole 45-minute practice session takes place this afternoon at 3:45pm local time before qualifying gets underway tomorrow at 11:25am. The opening race of the year gets underway at 10:35am on Sunday morning.
