Once a Race Driver, Always a Race Driver

After years of stress with strategy, telemetry, teammates and pit stops, Patrick Dempsey and Mark Webber finally retired from racing to live a life far away from fast cars, racetracks and competition. Looks like they really enjoy it, don’t you think?

9:11 Magazine’s Episode 5 Is Dedicated To Dreams

Porsche’s video magazine is named for the 9 minutes and 11 seconds they dedicate to different aspects of the brand’s contemporary and historic tales. This particular episode is cut up into five segments, each as interesting as the prior. Here’s a bit of what you’ll get to see when you click play.

1. Porsche brand ambassador Patrick Dempsey heads to the peninsula segment of Germany known as Sylt. It is a quiet and contemplative sort of place, wherein Dempsey finds himself in a discussion of the dreams it can hold. People go to Sylt to experience its natural beauty. Dempsey is behind the wheel of a Carrera 2.7 when he describes Sylt as « Raw, pure, and authentic », which could also describe his ride for the day.

2. A quick history of Porsche’s 956 racing car, which dominated world sports car competition from its introduction in 1982 to its end, when it was replaced by the slightly updated 962 for 1985.

3. Two brothers in Dresden, East Germany were enamored with the quick and fun Porsches they read about from West Germany, but certainly could not afford to outright purchase their own. They set about building a 356 of their own design, using decommissioned war Kubelvagen parts, and cast-off metal truck hoods hand-formed over hours of manual labor. They’d discussed the plan with Ferry Porsche himself, and he agreed to ship them a set of used pistons and cylinders to complete their project with true Porsche components.

4. In a gorgeous display, Porsche shows off a 991.2 Carrera 2 dancing in drifts across an icy skid pad. The car cuts a gorgeous Miami Blue figure against the pure white of the snow.

5. Hans-Peter Porsche has a very elaborate train room, of which he is extremely proud. The detail work and the engineering required to make this room work. Now a museum installation, HPP’s private collection is available for all the world to see.

Patrick Dempsey Shares His Zen Perspective on Racing: Slow Down to Speed Up

For a man who started racing relatively late in life, Patrick Dempsey has gone quite far. Sure, some of his involvement can be attributed to the fortune made from playing Dr. Dreamboat, but he’s taken it more seriously than the regular celebrity-turned-racer, and learned some of the mental approach which make the best so imperturbable. In fact, he’s become quite zen in his approach to motorsport.

It might come across as a bit preachy, but Dempsey touches on an oft-ignored, semi-philosophical aspect of racing. It’s true that racing rewards aggression and the traits which typically go hand-in-hand with it—namely persistence, resilience, and determination. Yet, the best of the best invariably exude a sense of calm and focus. That composure helps them avoid mistakes, ensure consistency, plan ahead, clear their mind of any extraneous fluff, and dedicate every iota of focus to the task at hand. Since racing is one of the most mentally taxing endeavors known to man, those who can process and anticipate everything that racing entails, succeed. To handle the challenges of driving the car, the peripheral challenges, and still have some mental reserves left over are those who go the furthest.

Slow down to go fast.
