Is a 911 GT2 RS Faster Than A 918 Spyder at Hockenheim?

Unlike many cars of its ilk, this GT2 RS sees a great deal of track time. Whether it be racing against current GT3 Cup cars or highly modified Nissan GT-Rs, sebastian vittel’s RS is a regular sight at tracks across France and Germany. It’s been given a few tasteful modifications to suit it to the regular beating it takes; utilizing Endless pads, steel brakes, taller wing supports from a GT3 RS, and a Manthey alignment for even more purchase on the pavement. As we see in the footage below, its performance is enough to run with the 918 Spyder—a car which costs nearly six times as much. This stellar performance makes you wonder whether the GT2 RS is merely the quickest 911 on the market today, or if it’s the defacto Porsche flagship of recent years.

Despite having only two driven wheels, the GT2 RS actually betters the four-wheel drive 918 Spyder in low-speed acceleration. This is a real asset at the tight and technical Hockenheim, where strong speed out of the hairpins leading onto the long straights pays dividends. It’s the turbocharged, two-wheel drive GT2 RS which excels in these slow-speed acceleration zones, and only once they have room to stretch their legs a bit does the 918 stretch a small lead. Not exactly what one would think when considering the specs, eh?

Weighing roughly 500 pounds more than the GT2 RS, the 918 isn’t quite the agile thing that the latest RS is, but it has a habit of belying its weight and putting it to lighter, more powerful cars. So much of that comes down to the way the 918 makes great use of its hybrid power when driven through all four wheels. With minimal wheelspin and wild torque from zip, shouldn’t that make it the king of hairpins?

Only once is vittel beaten off a hairpin (1:50), but it’s his too-early entry that’s to blame.

Well, sebastian vittel once again proves the versatility of the RS with this duel. Granted, these two aren’t pushing more than 8/10ths, the 918 isn’t exactly track-tuned, and traffic does allow vittel to close the gap after the hypercar begins to walk away. Nevertheless, it’s a strong showing from both, but it’s the RS which looks even stronger after making quick work of what ought to be the quickest in the Porsche stable.

Seven Wonders Of The World: Porsche Announces A New Experience Center At Hockenheim

Atlanta, Le Mans, Leipzig, Los Angeles, Silverstone, and Shanghai are all the current cities in which you can find a Porsche Experience Center. The Le Mans, Silverstone, Shanghai facilities are built on the premises of famous international racing circuits, while the Atlanta, Leipzig, and LA facilities are built on Porsche-owned properties with their own unique driving circuits available to experience. Within the next two years, Porsche will build their seventh PEC facility, a 176,000 square meter area within the heart of the historic German circuit, Hockenheim. Each of the state-of-the-art automotive test facilities contain features to test the abilities of Porsche and driver alike: A complex handling course, several tests of driving dynamics, and an off-road course for Cayenne and Macan owners.

Like other PECs, the new construction at Hockenheim will feature a modern building with Porsche’s now-standard futuristic design language. That 48,000 square foot building will house event spaces, conference rooms, a Porsche swag shop, a Porsche Classic Lounge, as well as a themed restaurant and cafe. Exhibition areas for legendary Porsches of the past will also feature heavily in the design of the building, as well as service bays and workshops for various racing and classic Porsche automobiles.

“The Porsche Experience Centers allow our customers and fans to experience the performance of our vehicles as well as the fascination of the brand at first hand”, says Porsche’s Detlev von Platen. “We are extending this unique offering by constructing this new site near our main plant in Zuffenhausen.”

Thomas Reister, CEO of emodrom-group spearheading this venture, followed up by saying: “I am delighted that we have been able to attract Porsche, our preferred candidate, as a long-term tenant for the redesigned Hockenheimring. The manufacturer’s decision to construct another Porsche Experience Center here, so close to the corporate headquarters, demonstrates the great potential of our concept, and sends a strong message to other companies and universities that they should get involved with our agile mobility showcase. At emodrom-group, we are investing purely private funds in the double-digit millions, which, in the medium to long term, will also benefit the city, the metropolitan area and Baden-Württemberg within the automotive utopia of Germany.”

Construction is due to start toward the middle of 2018, with the experience center expected to be operational by the end of 2019.

2016 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Hockenheimring, Germany report

Italian Porsche Junior, Matteo Cairoli inherited his third Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup victory of the season after fellow Porsche Junior (and home hero), Sven Müller was penalised for an illegal overtaking move on the first lap.

The in-house championship rivals’ battle began during qualifying at the Hockenheimring track, 50 miles north of Weissach. Lechner Racing’s Müller set his benchmark early in the session while Cairoli waited until the end to challenge.

However, the FACH Auto Tech driver’s final lap on new tyres was curtailed by a red flag with ended the session early, the Italian having to settle for second on the grid behind Müller (the latter heading into the German Supercup round with an 18-point lead after victory last time out in Hungary).

Müller may have lost out on a fourth Supercup win of 2016 but the German Porsche Junior still leads the standings ahead of Cairoli.

At the start, it was the Italian Porsche Junior who made the better start, diving up the inside of Müller at turn one. The German Porsche Junior though hadn’t given up, running off the track onto the tarmacked run-off before rejoining back in the lead.

Cairoli didn’t make the race easy for Müller, hounding the championship leader lap after lap and getting close to taking the lead after a late safety car period bunched up the field. However, his advances proved fruitless on the track as Müller took the chequered flag 0.4 seconds ahead.

The action wasn’t over though. Two hours after the chequered flag fell, the stewards deemed Muller’s opening lap move to have been performed illegally, handing the German a one-second penalty that promoted Cairoli to the top step.

Behind the duelling duo, Jeffrey Schmidt (who stared at Hockenheim early in the year in the Carrera Cup Deutschland) equalled his third-place finish in Austria with another podium finish having forced his way passed Robert Lukas, the latter starting the race from third.

That grid slot would have been occupied by the third Porsche Junior in the field, Mathieu Jaminet if it hadn’t been for a ten-place penalty handed to the French Porsche ace for his role in the opening lap accident last time out at the Hungaroring.

Starting from 13th, Jaminet was aiming for eighth place after qualifying, an aim he achieved in the race with some clean overtaking moves. The result, however, has seen him drop from second to fourth in the points table, as Cairoli moves back into second, 16 points behind Müller.
