Porsche’s Private Museum Storage Warehouse

Autoblog.com’s Michael Harley was recently asked by Porsche if he would like to take a tour of their private warehouse while he was visiting Stuttgart, to which he graciously obliged. The storage facility had 336 total cars at the time of his tour, the historic vehicles kept there as most make their rotation for display at the publicly open museum down the street, or sent out to events around the world. Filling the building were old race cars, show concepts, development mules, prototypes and engineering displays. In his own words, “…there was an overpowering smell of used motor oil, rubber and fuel…”. Fantastic. The picture above is of the legendary 935 racer “Moby Dick”, the finished result of a restoration project which we recently featured here at: http://www.carbuildindex.com/17571/1978-porsche-935-moby-dick-restoration/. Vintage Factory Photos of Porsche Slant Noses During Production

What once started at Porsche as a type written list of only 10 extra available special options in the early 1950’s grew into a full Special Request Department (a.k.a. “Special Wishes”) by 1978, and then further into Porsche Exclusive in 1986. By the 1980’s… …United States, Japan and U.K. customers were drumming up enough demand for special individualized options that the new department was created to cater to their requests for wild custom color combinations, increased horsepower and anything else the imagination could fabricate, as long as the checkbook could back it up. The most popular of those options during that era was the Slant Nose body kit, which the factory installed along with a host of whatever other special equipment was ordered at the time, as well. If you like these pictures, then be sure to check out our previous feature showing vintage pictures of 959’s during assembly, too…

Porsche 959 Factory Photographs

Happy Thanksgiving Day Weekend 2015 everybody! Today I am re-posting a few features from the past in case you have missed them previously, but will be returning with new content this weekend. Stay tuned and thanks for checking in! Since we are on the subject of vintage factory photographs anyways, what better way to kick off an all new segment than with pictures of Porsche 959’s during their production? In total, 337 street legal 959’s were built at the Zuffenhausen assembly plant through the end of 1988 for the FIA homologation of Porsche’s Group B rally car, known as the Gruppe B. The factory used the race series as a test mule for a new all wheel drive system and advanced aerodynamics, as well as kevlar construction to keep the weight down. It is interesting to note that in 1992 to 1993… …Porsche used spare parts to build 8 additional ‘Komfort’ specification road cars, all propelled by a version of the same horizontally opposed 6 cylinder that we had come to know so very well, although this time around with 2.85 liters and employing twin turbos resulting in 444 hp. The classic 911 silhouette is still obvious in these 80’s super cars, […]
