2015 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season preview

Last year, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB was a two horse race between two-time champion, Michael Meadows and his rookie teammate, Josh Webster. After an intense season of racing, it was the Total 911 columnist who came out on top to claim his maiden crown.

However, in 2015, the Carrera Cup Scholarship winner will face a tougher test as the Porsche Carrera Cup GB gears up for its biggest season yet. 27 Porsche 991 GT3 Cup cars were present at the championship’s media day a few weeks ago while over 30 competitors are expected for the first round at Brands Hatch this weekend.

For his title defence, Webster has switched from Redline Racing to Team Parker Racing where he will be joined by Stephen Jelley, a Carrera Cup GB race winner during his initial stint in the championship between 2010-11.

The man they all want to beat: Josh Webster looking relaxed at the 2015 media day.

Webster will once again see his main opposition for the Carrera Cup GB crown come from within the Redline Racing ranks, where Meadows returns under the Samsung SUHD TV Racing banner.

This year, the 2012 and 2013 champion will be joined by ex-European Formula 3 racer, Nicolas Latifi who will dovetail his maiden GT campaign with a further year in single seaters.

Daniel Cammish starred during last year’s Brands Hatch finale, winning race one and leading the second encounter on his series debut. The Leeds racer returns in 2015 for a full season and is many people’s tip for the title.

Daniel Cammish is back for a full campaign with Redline Racing.

Elsewhere, Rockingham race winner, Paul Rees has switched across to the crack Parr squad where he will be joined by GP3 convert, Dino Zamparelli, the Bristol-based driver choosing Paul Robe’s team to make his sports car bow.

Qualifying at this weekend’s season opener is sure to be a frantic affair with over 30 Porsche 911 Cup cars jostling for space on the tight and twisting, 1.2-mile Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

After Brands Hatch, the series heads to Spa-Francorchamps, this season’s blue riband event, where the Carrera Cup GB field will support the Belgian round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB grid has grown exponentially since 2014 thanks to a generous prize pot from Porsche GB.

From there, action switches back to the UK’s shores with races at Oulton Park and Croft taking place in June, before the circus heads to Snetterton (Webster’s home race) and Knockhill (a happy hunting ground for Meadows) in August.

After two races on the Silverstone National circuit, the 2015 Porsche Carrera Cup GB will return to Brands Hatch on 10-11 October to crown its champion on the longer, more demanding Grand Prix track layout.

Total 911 will bring you all the action throughtout the year, right here on Total911.com. Watch out for all the news and race reports from this weekend’s season opener on Monday.

Daniel Cammish joins 2015 Porsche Carrera Cup GB grid

After a star turn in the Porsche GB guest car at last year’s Brands Hatch finale, Daniel Cammish has confimed he will graduate to a full-time Porsche Carrera Cup GB drive in 2015 with the championship-winning Redline Racing team.

Cammish took pole position and won the first race on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit last October during his Carrera Cup GB debut. The 25-year-old was leading race two when he pitted to change tyres in changeable conditions, dropping him to fifth but giving him the fastest lap.

The 2013 British Formula Ford champion (driving for Nick Tandy’s JTR team), Cammish will race for Redline Racing, the squad that took Total 911 columnist, Josh Webster to the 2014 Carrera Cup GB championship in the latter’s debut year.

The Leeds-based racer will step up full-time to the Carrera Cup GB after a year racing in the GT4 class of the British GT Championship.

With the help of two-time Carrera Cup GB champion, Tim Harvey, Cammish has secured backing from Nationwide Accident Repair Services for his 2015 tilt at the Porsche Carrera Cup GB title.

“I felt that Daniel was the most deserving and talented driver without a drive, so it was good to put the two parties together,” explained Harvey, a Nationwide’s brand ambassador. “Nationwide has had a lot of success in the Carrera Cup and so Daniel has a lot to live up to, but I rate him very, very highly.”

“I want to hit the ground running and chase the title,” said Cammish, who will get his first competitive action behind the wheel of a Porsche 991 GT3 Cup car at Brands Hatch on 4-5 April. “I’m with a team with a great pedigree and I want to repay the faith that Nationwide has put in me.”

You can follow all the action from the 2015 Porsche Carrera Cup GB in our dedicated motorsport section, as well as Josh Webster’s exclusive behind-the-scenes columns in each issue of Total 911.

Cammish's new sponsor, Nationwide, backed Tim Harvey to two Carrera Cup GB titles in 2008 and 2010.
