Is A 911 Turbo the Perfect Getaway Car?

You’re in 1980s England and you’ve got a case full of « powder » and some unsavory types on your tail in a flash Land Rover. Hop in the 930 and blast off, chap!

This little video was created by the folks at Hagerty UK as a way to promote next weekend’s upcoming Radwood UK. The event will be at Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday, August 11th. In the interest of full disclosure, I am one of the co-founders of Radwood, and I will be travelling to the UK for this show, so if you’re in the area stop in and say hello!

Now, I won’t give away the ending of this quick little chase video, but I will say it’s well worth watching for the humor of it all. And, you know, for the glorious turbocharged flat-six engine note!

Ride Along For A Frantic Lap Around the ‘Ring in a 1976 Porsche Turbo

Though the Widowmaker strikes fear into the hearts of many, this footage suggests it’s not necessarily as fearsome as its reputation suggests. While it wouldn’t be fair to call it a pussycat, this example looks approachable by a talented shoe. Granted, the car here is heavily modified and the man in the seat is one of the best instructors at the Nurburgring, but it shows that the classic 911 Turbo can be tamed with a delicate touch.

It looks slightly pushy at turn-in, but the car is planted and settled under throttle. It even leaps out of corners with a hint of oversteer here and there (4:29). Predictable enough, but its high-speed manners are what are the most surprising. It looks friendly—almost tame, and though the steering writhes around in Andreas Gülden’s hands, it looks like the most laborious part of driving the car is rowing that shifter!

Such a confidence-inspiring car is a huge asset during the 24 Hour Classic, where serious speed differentials separate the pros in faster cars from the hordes of playful amateurs in mildly modded E30s. As a result, quick decisions must be made frequently.

Gülden’s negotiation of traffic is even more impressive than his stylish and understated driving. Huge traffic jams decorate the 16.12-mile course (7:34), and he can quickly switch his pace from banzai to drive-through lane at the drop of a hat. He can also pounce at the precise moment without compromising either’s safety (11:12). He’s the real deal alright.

He keeps his professional cool until he’s cramped by a Golf at higher speeds (9:01). His gesticulation is justified; the oblivious driver ahead needs to provide the faster cars a way through—especially in the fastest sections of the track. Like a seasoned pro, he proceeds unfazed until his podium hopes are dashed with mechanical failure of some sort (12:32). To suffer something like that to happen in one of the Nordschleife’s most intimidating corners and not panic deserves some sort of prize, though.

Not the hand gesture I would’ve picked, but it show remarkable composure in dangerous situations.

1. 1987 PORSCHE 911 Turbo Slant Nose Cabriolet FOR SALE

Among the most rare Porsche models ever created, the Turbo Cabriolet was only available for 1987-89 model years, and fewer than two thousand were sold for worldwide consumption. Of those, only a small fraction were fitted with the 505 option code for slant nose bodywork. This is one of those collector-grade cars with just 67,000 miles that is just begging for a true enthusiast to make a bid. This is a car that deserves to be driven to and from car shows, concours, and the occasional bomb down an empty back country road. With interest in the 80s and 90s only continuing to blossom, this slant cab will only continue to be worth more in the coming years.

2. 1995 PORSCHE 968 Cabriolet FOR SALE

With a giant 3-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine, the 968 is an absolute joy to drive, even if it doesn’t sound as melodic as any of its 911 siblings. This 60,000 mile example would be an excellent summer daily driver, or weekend warrior. This is the last of the hand-built Porsches, and deserves a place in any collection of fun drivers. This is another pretty rare car, as fewer than 4000 examples were produced from 1993-1995. It’s still got all the hallmarks of Porsche’s excellent transaxle cars, including exquisite handling, but you can throw the top back for a nice summer evening cruise.

3. 1965 PORSCHE 356C Cabriolet FOR SALE

Unlike 911s, Porsche 356s are most valuable when the top goes down. While 911 Cabs are still seen as undesirable, a 356 Cab will only be exceeded in value by a special drop top Speedster, Roadster, or Convertible D. Personally, I like the Cabriolet models better as the windshield surround is still integrated into the bodyshell, and is painted in body color for a nice accent. This 1965 model is the last of the 356 line, and includes disc brakes at all four wheels. This is an incredible weekend driver, and the Champagne Yellow color just pops so well. Of the five here, this is the one I’d most want to drive home.

4. 1990 PORSCHE 944 S2 Cabriolet FOR SALE

Like the 968 Cabriolet above, this late 944 S2 Cabriolet has the same 3-liter twin-cam engine but without variable valve timing. It’s got a few extra miles on it, with a total sitting at about 95,000, but these cars will run essentially forever if they are maintained. I love this gorgeous deep merlot wine color of the exterior, and it melds perfectly with the maroon interior and tan convertible top. This is a very rare combination, and it looks extremely good to my eyes.

5. 2009 PORSCHE 911 Turbo Cabriolet FOR SALE

Perhaps the best daily driver grade Porsche of all time is the 997-generation Turbo. This is the pre-facelift model with the old Mezger engine before they moved to the current generation of DFI Turbo. This example is painted in a beautiful and rare Malachite Green Metallic paint, and that works so well with the tan interior. I’m not 100% sold on the cocoa convertible top, but it could work in the right climate. This is a ten year old car with only 14,500 miles on it, so it will have plenty of life left, and you could drive this for ages without ever getting bored or uncomfortable. Excellent choice.
