OFFICIAL: New Porsche 911 Carrera GTS revealed

Porsche has revealed the new 911 Carrera GTS, the evocatively named latest addition to the 991 generation of Zuffenhausen’s darling sports car. With a top speed of 190mph, the new Porsche 991 Carrera GTS becomes the fastest 911 Carrera ever built.

Following on from the much lauded Boxster and Cayman GTS models, the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is the successor to the similarly well-received 997 Carrera GTS however, unlike the last generation GTS, both rear and four-wheel drive versions of the latest ultimate Carrera will be released concurrently.

Powering the new Porsche 991 Carrera GTS will be the 3.8-litre DFI flat six, as used in the standard 911 Carrera S. However, power will be boosted to 430hp thanks to the standard fitment of Porsche’s Powerkit, bringing an additional 30hp and improved mid-range torque.

The increased performance is transferred to the road through either the slick-shifting PDK transmission or seven-speed manual gearbox, the latter confirming that this is one of the last great 911s for driving purists, while the Carrera 4 GTS benefitting from Porsche Torque Vectoring and a rear limited slip differential.

Further standard mechanical equipment includes Porsche Active Suspension Management, which lowers the car’s ride height by 10mm, while the inclusion of the Sport Chrono package brings about Porsche’s dynamic engine mounts to further improve grip and cornering precision.

Like the Cayman and Boxster GTSs, the Porsche 991 Carrera GTS will also benefit from a sports exhaust system as standard, bringing about improved aural presence, while PDLS light system ensures improved night-time vision.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS utilises the wider Carrera 4 body shell for both variants, increasing the rear track width and providing greater visual presence thanks to the muscular rear arches.

Housed within these arches, the centre-lock wheels from the 991 Turbo S will come as standard however, unlike the polished rims from the forced induction 911, the 991 Carrera GTS’s 20-inch alloys will feature an exclusive matte black finish.

Alongside the new wheels, the 991 Carrera GTS features a number of aesthetic touches that set it apart from the rest of the current Porsche 911 Carrera range, the most evident of which is the revised front bumper, mimicking the aggressive design seen on the current GT3.

Elsewhere, the standard decklid air intake has been replaced with a black painted grill styled in a more classic manner, evoking the design utilised on the revered 1973 911 Carrera RS. The black finish is also extended to the trim strip between the rear lights on the rear-wheel drive version.

Completing the visual distinction are the smoked bi-xenon headlights, black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes and subtle ‘GTS’ decals on the bottom of the doors.

Inside, Porsche’s now ubiquitous use of Alcantara creates a luxurious cockpit with sporting pretensions, as the steering wheel, gear lever, dashboard, door cards, and centre panels on the leather sports seats benefit from the synthetic suede alternative.

Porsche 991 Carrera GTS Coupe

The Porsche 991 Carrera GTS Coupe will cost £91,098, with the Cabriolet version adding a further £8,504, while the new Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS will start at £95,862 for the Coupe and £104,385 for the Cabriolet. A release date has yet to be set.

‘Gran Turismo Sport’– The combination of letters originates from the 904 Carrera GTS, a racecar dating back to 1963 that could also be registered for use on public roads. In the 1980s and 1990s, the 924 GTS and 928 GTS cultivated this principle. It was reborn in 2007 in the form of the Cayenne GTS, and was subsequently applied to the ‘Type 997’ 911 Carrera and the Panamera.

With the new model, Porsche is extending the GTS principle once more to the 911 Carrera. Like the Cayenne GTS, Panamera GTS, Boxster and Cayman GTS models, this is a car that stands for superior driving dynamics in its segment.

Each of the four new 911 Carrera GTS models – a Coupé and a Cabriolet, available with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive – build on the established core values of the iconic rear-engined 911 by adding further technical features to generate even higher levels of dynamic performance and driving enjoyment.

Under the rear engine lid sits an evocative flat-six power unit, tuned to develop 430 hp, an increase of 30 hp over the Carrera S. This is combined with the Sport Chrono package offering dynamic engine mounts, as well as Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damper system, which lowers the car’s ride height by ten millimeters.

Improved efficiency has also led to quicker acceleration and higher top speeds, and Combined fuel consumption figures remain unchanged from the favorable level of the S models. For example, when combined with the Porsche PDK (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) double-clutch gearbox, the 911 Carrera GTS can return 32.5 mpg and also sprint from zero to 62 mph in 4.0 seconds (Cabriolet: 4.2 seconds). With the standard seven-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, a top speed of 198 mph is possible.

The exteriors of the new 911 Carrera GTS – like other GTS models – differ significantly from the other Carrera models. All versions feature the 911 Carrera 4 body with wide-flared rear wheel arches and a wider track. Also standard are 20-inch diameter alloy wheels with center-lock mechanism, painted in an exclusive matt black finish. Accentuating the nose styling are special trim elements and smoked bi-Xenon headlights with the addition of the Porsche Dynamic Lighting

System (PDLS). The air intake grilles on the rear engine lid feature bespoke GTS black trim strips. Black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes add to the strong visual identity.
