Kevin The Porsche Driver

rennsport-reunion

I just got home from Laguna Seca where I enjoyed four days at the Rennsport Reunion V. Rennsport is a gathering of the world’s greatest Porsche race cars and the drivers who drove them. This reunion is nirvana for Porsche enthusiast like me. You had to be there and thousands were.

Including a young man named Kevin who gave me a ride in a new Porsche.

Kevin’s job was to shuttle people from the paddock to their cars. Drive people around. Pretty basic. But Kevin took his role as a representative of the Porsche marque very personally. He was engaging, personable, and passionate. He shared how he got to drive on the track at the new Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. He spoke enthusiastically about the car he was driving, sharing performance specifications, options, and I could tell he was enjoying his role even though all he was doing was driving people back and forth to the parking lots.

Kevin took his job personally. He cared and added value to his passenger’s experience.

This is what happens when a company cares enough to hire, work with, and train individuals who take their role personally. It is a win-win for the employee and the customer. Are you doing this in your company?

The Next One

CarsYeahBlog2

This week I am heading to Laguna Seca where I will enjoy four days at the Rennsport Reunion V. Rennsport is a gathering of the world’s greatest Porsche race cars and the drivers who drove them to victory. This reunion is nirvana for Porsche enthusiasts and everyone who loves motorsports and automobile history. It takes place every four years.

Dr. Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry are smiling.

Whenever someone would ask Ferdinand Porsche what his favorite model of the marque was he would answer “The next one.” The lesson of course is not to rest on one’s laurels. One reason the brand he built has survived and remains so popular is because of a never ending drive to improve through competition and a desire to innovate. Another of his wonderful quotes was…

“I couldn’t find a sports car of my dreams, so I built it myself.”

So while I’m walking around Laguna Seca this week, soaking up all the history, and meeting scores of incredible people, I’ll keep a few questions in mind. How can I keep improving, innovating, stretching, and challenging myself to improve? And I’ll keep one last thing in mind as I try and answer these questions. Yes, it’s another of Ferry Porsches quotes.

“It all comes down to never giving up…”

See you at Rennsport.

What Are You Imagining?

CarsYeahBlog

When I was a kid I loved Porsches. I still do. A neighbor up the street had a 356 and that car made my mind wander. I could imagine driving one to the beach, with my surfboard hanging out of the back, top down, wind in my hair (yeah, I had hair back then), and the sound that engine made at 4500 rpm was oh-so-wonderful.

But I was just a kid.

At my first job out of college I hung a poster of a red Porsche above my desk. It was a visual reminder of what could be in my garage one day. It was in my face every morning when I arrived at the office and at the end of every late night.

Visualizing your goals is a strong motivator.

It can be really difficult to imagine something that seems so far out of reach. That special vehicle you want. A career in a field you are passionate about. A dream home or better yet, a dream garage. But it’s the fuel that will ignite your dreams.

Imagining is your first step to getting there.

What are you imagining?
