Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid First Drive: Huh—a Fun Plug-In SUV?

2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-hybrid
If anyone predicted Porsche would be one of the brands leading the charge on plug-in hybrids back when Chevrolet launched the Volt in 2010—just as Porsche was debuting its first-ever production hybrid with the Cayenne—that person should be dealing futures on Wall Street. By replacing that SUV with this 2015 Cayenne S E-Hybrid plug-in, Porsche now has three plug-ins, more than any other carmaker. Of course, one of those three is the 918 Spyder, which isn’t exactly mainstream production. But still. READ MORE ››

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: USA preview

For the second year in succession, two races at a venue never before used by the prestigious one-make Porsche 911 series will decide the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup as the 2014 season culminates at Circuit of The Americas in Texas.

As the season has progressed, the battle for the 22nd Porsche Supercup title has gradually boiled down to an intense fight between Porsche’s international scholarship winner, Earl Bamber and perennial frontunner, Kuba Giermaziak.

Bamber headed the points after an impressive victory for the Kiwi racer in round one at Barcelona. However, Giermaziak immediately hit back for his VERVA Lechner Racing team with a brace of victories in Monaco and Austria.

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup last visited America in 2006 with two races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Giermaziak looked to have cemented a solid lead with a third win at the Hungaroring only to see Bamber storm into the championship lead next time out at Spa Francorchamps as the Kiwi took the win after a thrilling duel with outgoing champion, Nicki Thiim.

Last time out in Monza, neither of the championship protagonists reached the top step of the podium, instead having to settle for third (Bamber) and fourth (Giermaziak) as Porsche Junior, Sven Müller took a breakthrough victory around the Italian speedbowl.

This leaves the title battle finally balanced as the 2014 championship concludes with the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup’s first visit to the USA since the Indianapolis double-header in 2006.

Sven Müller won last time out at Monza and is hunting Klaus Bachler down for third in the points standings.

Two races around the 3.43-mile Texas track will decide whether it is Bamber or Giermaziak who goes into the history books. The first 14-lap race will take place at 3:00pm (local time) on Saturday, with Sunday playing host to the second encounter at 11:15am.

Bamber currently holds the advantage, with a five-point gap back to Giermaziak but, the Pole has experience of the COTA circuit having competed in September’s Tudor USCC race at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT America.

Giermaziak’s teammate, Ben Barker will be hoping to round off his season the way he started it. The Total 911 columnist took a podium in Barcelona and will be hoping to match or better that result in America.

Total 911 columnist, Ben Barker will be hoping to round off his season with a maiden Supercup victory at COTA.

Like his VERVA Lechner teammate, Barker also competed in the Lone Star Le Mans event, giving him an advantage over much of the 2014 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup grid who will have to learn the demanding track in practice.

Among the other potential challengers for race victory, Klaus Bachler will look to consolidate his third place in the championship from Müller while Michael Ammermüller is still looking for his first 2014 triumph.

2014 FIA WEC: Shanghai Six Hours preview

Porsche Team Manthey will be hoping for better luck this weekend as the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship heads to China for the sixth round of the season.

The factory Porsche 911 RSRs enter the six-hour race at Shanghai International Circuit on the back of winless streak that extends all the way back to round one at Silverstone, when the no. 92 and no. 91 Porsche 911 RSRs finished first and second respectively.

Since then, both Porsche Team Manthey entries have scored second place finishes, with the no. 92 machine also achieving third place in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans thanks to Marco Holzer, Richard Lietz and Frédéric Makowiecki.

Friday practice has been blighted by wet conditions. Does the Porsche 911 RSR have the required dry pace?

Last time out in Fuji though, both Porsche 911 RSRs missed out on the podium after a difficult race in Japan. Lietz and Jörg Bergmeister (who renewed their partnership from 2013 in the USA) finished fourth, while Makowiecki and Patrick Pilet struggled to sixth in the LMGTE Pro class.

In this morning’s two free practice sessions, Makowiecki and Pilet have found themselves second in the GTE Pro timesheets, suggesting that the two Porsche 911 RSRs will enjoy better fortune in Shangai.

However, with rain spoiling much of the practice time (and playing into the hands of the Porsche 911’s superior traction) Sunday’s six-hour battle could prove a different proposition should it be dry.

Frédéric Makowiecki is the highest ranked Porsche racer in the drivers' standings heading into China.

Porsche currently find themselves second in every LMGTE Pro championship, with Makowiecki sitting 49.5 points behind Ferrari duo, Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander in the drivers’ standings.

Ferrari also leads the way in the manufacturers’ cup, and the teams’ standings. With just 12 hours of racing left in the season after the FIA WEC circus leaves China, Porsche Team Manthey need a good result in Shanghai to keep their championship hopes alive.
